The Birth Place at Olathe Medical Center – The New Way of Birthing

Olathe Medical Center NICU

Project Highlight: The Birth Place at Olathe Medical Center

Olathe Medical Center (OMC), a part of Olathe Health, is a five-story acute care medical center located in Olathe, Kansas. The hospital advocates the need to stay active and ahead of their community’s growing needs when it comes to healthcare.

HMN partnered with OMC to design a new, 105,000 SF four-story obstetrics wing, called The Birth Place, with a level II neonatal intensive care unit. The Birth Place opened their doors to the public on Wednesday, May 24, and will deliver enhanced obstetric services in a new luxury hotel like environment.

The second floor houses the NICU unit. The NICU unit has seven single-family rooms, which provide parents a home away from home. Each single-family room is equipped with a full bathroom, pull out sleeper and a work desk. The hospital can add seven more additional single-family rooms in the future. Four “pods” are available for higher acuity babies.

The third floor consists of the labor and delivery area, providing spacious Labor, Delivery and Recovery (LDR) rooms for the future parent(s). Along with the fifteen new LDRs, The Birth Place will offer two state-of-the-art cesarean operating rooms and three recovery rooms.

The fourth floor houses the postpartum unit and a well-baby nursery. There are currently twenty postpartum rooms with the ability to expand to twenty-seven. These well-appointed rooms offer space for the families while the mom and baby recover. Each room has a queen-size Murphy bed allowing couples to sleep comfortably. To provide mom a relaxing recovery, most rooms have oversized jetted bath tubs. Each of these postpartum rooms offer a spa-like atmosphere.

One unique design feature is an outside balcony and a family lounge on the NICU and postpartum floors. This allows the patients to get outside air without leaving the building. Each family lounge offers a kitchen and TV area for respite, resembling an at-home atmosphere.

In addition to obstetrics, the expansion provided OMC with a new main entry. OMC desired a new modern and inviting space as you enter the hospital. The response was a four-story atrium which integrates a new reception area along with seating that takes advantage of the view and fireplace. Just down from the main entry, is the new cafeteria. The cafeteria is a replacement of OMC’s existing food service facilities, offering a wider menu along with the hospital’s ability to expand to a full patient room service. The Oh Baby! Boutique is a dedicated baby gift shop located on the first floor, near the new Starbucks featured bistro. The bistro, dining area, cafeteria, kitchen, and boutique tie together the existing building with the new obstetrics wing.

The new tower provides flexibility for future growth. The hospital can potentially add four more floors vertically or one whole bay horizontally. On two levels, there is shell space to allow for additional patient rooms as needed in the future.

The new expansion at Olathe Medical Center provides a new image to the hospital and the campus. Congratulations to Olathe Health and Olathe Medical Center on their continued growth. HMN is proud to have had the chance to be part of this historic expansion.
