HMN Architects partnered with Hiawatha Community Hospital to provide full architectural and interior design services on their three-story addition. The hospital wanted a new facility to house growing clinical practices. The physicians in Hiawatha had out-grown their existing building. The hospital had also outgrown spaces being used for physical therapy, occupational therapy, and cardiac rehabilitation.

Some issues, prompting the addition, were the main hospital entry was not prominent. The business office and patient registration were inadequate and prohibited the expansion of adjacent units. Likewise, the location of the existing specialty clinic in the hospital was in the way of potential expansion of adjacent units.

The new addition solved each of these issues. A new prominent entry welcomes visitors to the hospital. The new lobby allows individuals entering to be directed to their destinations. The patient registration, business office and gift shop were relocated to be front and center.

The first floor houses a new, state-of-the-art physical and occupational therapy as well as cardiac rehabilitation spaces. The open floorplan with floor-to-ceiling windows on the East and West sides affords ample access to daylight and views of the exterior landscape. Kansas limestone inside and out are warm finished lending a non-institutional feel.

The second floor is home to the new physician’s clinics with exam rooms, procedure rooms, lab, physician offices and support space functions. Again, warm finishes and daylight throughout the new spaces.

The lower level has specialty clinics for rotating specialists, as well as shell space for future expansion. The new addition allowed the hospital to expand the existing lab and lab waiting room in the existing parts of the hospital.
