Introduction

In keeping touch with HMN Architects’ integrated design approach, the Interior Design Department is a vital part of our project team. Director of Interior Design and Associate, Amy Higgins, leads a team of two experienced designers.

Amy has been with HMN Architects since 2006 becoming a major asset to the Interior Design Department. She has experience in all aspects of design including construction administration, furniture specifications, and finish selections for a variety of projects, graphic design and construction documents.

NCIDQ Certified Designer, Sarah Wesely, joined HMN Architects in 2012 bringing innovative design solutions. Sarah has a vast knowledge of design including experience in a variety of markets and brings a fresh perspective to her projects.

At HMN since 2006, Natalie Kemp is a NCIDQ Certificate holder and LEED Accredited Professional who responds to client needs and assists in communicating design intent and making material selections. Natalie also has a great understanding of space planning and ADA requirements.

Integration? How?

HMN’s Interior Design Department creates customized solutions using materials that are not only durable and cost-effective but strength the attractive aesthetic of the facility. Our integrated design approach combines the needs of patients, families, and staff to provide sustainable interiors that increase the quality of the environment for the facility’s occupants. Working with the Architects and Engineers on the design team, HMN’s Interior Designers provide interior environments that enhance the design intent. As a member of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), HMN Architects strives to incorporate aspects of the USGBC’s building practices.

We often ask our clients, “What do you want your facility to communicate?” At HMN, we feel that “The building tells a story about the service that service can not entirely tell by itself.” We find that clients are stumped trying to decide between the facility they want or the facility they need? Well, our team of architects and interior designers are here to interrupt that thought process to ask, “Why can’t you have both?” As healthcare patients demand the best quality of care from the facility they choose, the design of the space plays a key part in the impression patients have of that care. We create and design facilities and interior design spaces that focus primarily on patients to create a healing place and a caring place. We want the facilities interiors to be innovative and inviting yet private. We have a patient centric design mind. We also find that in the healthcare industry, our designs are better for the quality of care when there is a connection to nature.

Family Focus

Knowing that patients loved ones are often frequenting the facility, we want to make sure we are family focused as well. We want the families of the patients to feel comfort in knowing their loved ones are being cared for with top-notch quality. Integration and innovation is taking over right now. Our interior designers know and understand the need that the facility needs to be a healing environment. We provide many of our facilities with unique healing gardens in a caring culture. By integrating a lot of nature aspects into the design, we are helping the facility and staff in their goal to promote health.

We have already started to acknowledge recycled content, resource reuse, regional materials, certified wood, and low emitting materials as a great start to integrating sustainability in our design. Through a holistic approach, we have evidence-based design strategies for improving results, minimizing stress, improving patient and staff safety, improving the work environment, and improving patient and staff satisfaction. We consider these strategies for every project, every time.
